The Loopler Speed Build: Boost First
Ignore most score cards. Place boost gates first, stack speed per loop, and let the bar fill because you never stop.
A Loopler speed build wins because the car is around the eight so often that a small per-loop score becomes a flood. You are not drafting points. You are drafting time compression. This is also the language of Steam’s lowest-loops leaderboards: fewer laps to fill the bar means you went faster, not that you scored “better” in a vacuum. If you want fat on-pass numbers instead, that is a score build. If you want a crowd of extra cars, that is a ghost build. Mixing all three is how the goal doubles and you stall.
The embedded Sifd run is a demo-era 100k speed world first. He talks about stored speed in the 95,000–118,000 range while the needle lies, a 115,444 loop cap on that board, and a car that is no longer visible. 1.0 numbers, caps, and card ranks may differ. The habit is what transferred: boost first, speed per loop, ignore score bait.
Gate order is the whole build
Each track has a fixed number of gate placement slots. Order is a combo, not decoration. For speed:
- Boost first. A boost gate at the start of the sentence feeds every later trigger. You want the car faster before it hits gold, fuel, or anything else. Place-first is not a metaphor; it is the slot closest to the start of the loop you can claim.
- Fuel or refuel second if the tank is the fail state. Empty fuel is a dead run. Speed without a refill plan is a highlight reel that explodes on round 8. A refuel/fuel gate is support, not a second engine.
- Gold only as a shop battery. Gold gates print money. They do not fill the bar. One is plenty on a speed line.
- Lucky and chain later. Lucky gates double their value on upgrade; they multiply whatever you already planted. Chain is a combo finisher, not an opener. Score gates are usually skips. They want to be hit often, which sounds like speed, but they compete for slots you needed for boost.
Inspect Track in the pit stop before you drop the second gate. 1.0 highlights the gate you are holding and gives you a cancel button. Use both. Slot counts change by layout; Infinity, Hotdog, and Crown do not share a template. See the tracks page and the gate tier list.
Cards that belong here live in the on-loop speed and on-loop fuel families. On-drift gold such as Golden Drift (+1 gold every 40 drift ticks, max 10 per repair) is acceptable support if you are already drifting hard. Loopler (score total loops multiplied when looping) looks like a speed friend and is usually a trap: it wants you thinking about score math instead of boost slots. Lucky Strike (10% on loop to buff a random gate +50% next trigger) is excellent after the track is boost-heavy, because the random buff lands on a boost gate more often. Skip on-pass score packs even when they are rare-looking. Rarity includes Common; stars are not a plan. Rankings: card tier list.
Charms should shorten the lap or keep the tank alive. “Gates 10% chance to trigger twice” is a speed charm because boost firing twice is two accelerations. Coupon is multiplicative — fine if it multiplies speed or gold you already own. Skull (+10% goal) is the opposite of a lowest-loops plan. Pacifier (−10% goal) is a legal cheat for scared bars and for boards that still score by filling a contract. Demo treated those two plus Trade Requisition as daily/weekly exclusives; 1.0 may keep the idea. See Challenges and the charm tier list.
Lowest loops, fuel, and the garage
Steam leaderboards include lowest loops on tracks. That board is a speed board. Extra ghosts can help because extra cars also hit boost gates, but a ghost-first kit is a different page. For a pure speed attempt: fewer loops to goal is the trophy. Do not celebrate a 10,000-loop clear on a lowest-loops board; that is a score-shaped win wearing a speed hat.
Fail states stay the same. Empty fuel ends the run. Broken durability ends the run. Overdrive can activate late as a last sprint when the percentage is gone. Do not build for overdrive. Build so you never see it. Speed-up buttons up to 4x exist so you can watch a solved engine without waiting. Stay on 1x until the first boost gate is obviously doing work. HUD layout is in How to Play.
Garage knobs that matter for this engine: Boost Cap, Top Speed, Acceleration, Fuel Tank, Fuel Efficiency. Frozen Threshold and Drift Grip matter on icy or drift-heavy layouts, not as your first rolls. Durability is a safety net. A part like Leaky Pump can roll +23% boost cap or −2.5% fuel consumption with no base benefit; that is a speed part. +2% lucky chance is acceptable once boost slots exist. Full part routing: Loadout and meta.
Cars: pick an identity that does not fight the plan. Extra starting durability (blue-style) forgives a greedy first hour. Gold equal to durability/10 on round complete (yellow-style) funds the second boost gate. Neither identity is a substitute for slot order. Unlock loadout so you can enable boost-family cards and gates and disable the score bait you keep accidentally drafting.
Demo history is useful and not current gospel. Boost-plus-refuel dominated the demo so hard that Mheep called it out as the one OP line and spent the months to 1.0 reworking gold income, first-round sameness, and shop droughts. 1.0 still lets boost-first work; it just stopped being the only sentence in the language. If a pack tries to turn your speed line into a museum of score gates, skip. Skip can cost 100. Pay it.
A speed run should look boring in the pit and violent on the tarmac. One family of cards, boost slots claimed first, fuel in the second thought, gold in the third, score almost never. When the sprite vanishes and the stored-speed number keeps climbing, you are doing it right. Then take that engine into How to Go Infinite instead of adding a ghost “just in case.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Should a speed build buy score cards?
Almost never. The bar fills because you loop faster, not because you drafted on-pass points. Score bait belongs on the score build page.
Why place boost gates first?
Order is a combo. Boost at the front of the sentence makes every later gate happen more often. See the gate tier list for archetypes.
What is the lowest-loops leaderboard?
A Steam board that rewards filling the goal in as few laps as possible. It is a speed trophy, not a high-score trophy. Infinity attempts are covered in How to Go Infinite.
Is Sifd's 100k video accurate for 1.0?
It is demo-era. Stored-speed numbers, loop caps, and card ranks may differ. Copy the boost-first habit, then trust current tooltips and the launch notes.
